Stories: Shania

We asked our members, “Why do you want to be part of CHAT Society?”

Shania – Board Member, CHAT Society

Currently, I am a Speech-Language Pathology student at the University of Alberta. I’m driven to make an impact on the lives of individuals with communication challenges in Edmonton.

As part of a directed research project in the SLP program, I had the opportunity to work alongside Daralynn, the president of CHAT, which instilled in me a passion for communication access and advocacy.
I had the opportunity to work with an extremely talented group of individuals to lay the groundwork for establishing the CHAT society, and feel very privileged to be able to continue to work with and learn from all those involved in CHAT as a board member.
Last fall, I also had the opportunity to volunteer at Alberta Aphasia Camp where I was privileged to learn from many different people with aphasia and their communication partners about their experiences with aphasia, as well as hear about the profound impact that this supportive community has had for campers and volunteers alike.
This experience reinforced for me the importance of community for individuals with communication challenges to be able to interact with and support each other, and has inspired me to work with an incredible team to make a difference for individuals with communication challenges
